Aspull emphatically beat local rivals wigan in the Lancashire plate clash running away with game in the 2nd half when Aspull’s superior strength and fitness told 

Wigan competed well for 50 mins but had no answer to Aspull’s pace and guile in the backs when the game opened up after half time break.

Wigan took an early lead scoring a converted try after only 2mins when back row Sione Afu picked up and ran straight through the Ruck to score under the post converted by sam gee 

Aspull had started slowly having not played any pre season games it was taking them time to get into the game although their defence was holding strong it took a while for their attack to function fully. 2nd row pat Wilson who was outstanding all day forced his way over after some good work by Liam west Kieron ford converted to level the scores 7:7 wigan continued to dominate early possession and Afu once again broke through and looked destined to score his 2nd try when Aspull’s young winger debutant Henry Ryder put in a try saving tackle forcing Afu to knock on as he went over the line. Aspull began to take control of the game with Liam west prominent it was west who gave Aspull the lead when he broke through several tackles on his way to the line converter by Ford 14:7 with Ht approaching Ford increased the lead with a penalty to give Aspull a 17:7 HT lead. 

Sam gee kicked a long range penalty early in the 2nd half to reduce the lead but Aspull never looked like losing the game and began to take full control the forwards who had dominated the scrums from the start were making holes in the wigan defence 2nd rows pat Wilson and Tom Barlow driving their opponents back on several occasions , allowing the Aspull backs to play some expansive rugby thrilling the large crowd capt sam kindred scored Aspull’s next try and 2 pens by Ford gave them a 18 point cushion going into the last 20mins with wigan tiring Aspull took full advantage Liam West score his 2nd try quickly followed by a great team try finished off by Fullback Rhodri Carlton -Jones Aspull continued to dominate and prop Hughie bloor was rewarded for his efforts when he scored the final try for converted to give Aspull a resounding victory a great team performance after a slow start outstanding for Aspull were Pat Wilson , Liam West , Jake Greenhalgh 


This was a Lancashire plate match but it was also played for the Christian Walsh Trophy Aspull’s Secretary who sadly passed away earlier this year 

The match , the large crowd and the great atmosphere was a fitting tribute to an Aspull Legend 


Next week Aspull travel to Oswestry to kick off their league campaign
