Aspull 53 - 5 Glossop
Aspull laid down a marker for the season with a superb all-round display at Emu Park, running in nine tries to sweep aside Glossop 53-5 and show exactly the standards this squad is aiming to set. A blistering first-half performance saw the hosts race into a 35-0 lead, with the backs playing some outstanding attacking rugby and the forwards matching them every step of the way in a dominant display that left Glossop with no answers. The result was one of Aspull's most complete performances in recent years and a perfect way to start the season.
We asked for standards to be set for the season and Aspull produced a sensational display in the sunshine, putting Glossop to the sword with a brilliant first-half performance that saw us race into a 35–0 lead.
The backs were absolutely sensational, moving the ball with pace, accuracy and confidence, while the forwards were technically excellent throughout and put the bigger Glossop pack under huge pressure, particularly in the tackle. The front row of Allan Martin, Tigre Coultas and Jack Weaver were excellent throughout, putting in a huge shift and really hurting the Glossop pack.
Graham Johnson was phenomenal and deservedly took home Man of the Match, although Aquila Coultas, Zeno Coultas Mike Farrimond and the ever-reliable Liam West could all have made a very strong case for the award.
The scoring started with some beautiful hands stretching the width of the pitch before Dave Fagan finished superbly in the corner.
Next came a brilliant break from Liam Reeve. Reeve dragged in three defenders before producing a pinpoint 30-yard pass to his winger, who strolled into the corner.
Then came the old fox in the box, Liam West. Nobody saw it. Not the referee. Not the crowd. Nobody. Everyone was looking right while Liam quietly picked the ball up with his left hand, slipped away and disappeared into the corner. Absolute class.
Captain Rhodri Carlton-Jones then got himself on the scoresheet with a lovely move around the back. A dummy, a step and suddenly the old boy was in the clear and still had enough pace to march into the corner.
Harvey Brehney then did what Harvey Brehney does and scored his customary try, waltzing through from around 25 yards out, all snake hips and swagger.
And then came the try of the day.
Seventeen-year-old Harley Lewis picked the ball up around his own 22, threw a huge dummy, stepped around four defenders and then absolutely pinned his ears back. Seventy-five yards later, Harley was under the sticks. Sensational.
Rhodri added the conversion, although his boot was not quite as clinical as the rest of his game. Four from nine will do nicely when you’ve got a 53–5 scoreline to play with, and now I’ve mentioned it I’m sure he will be back to his metronomical best next week.
After half-time, Aspull struggled against a high penalty count in Glossops favour. The shackles had definitely been put on. However where we may have imploded in recent seasons, the lads kept their cool throughout, rode the wave and came out the other side, producing some lovely tries later on in the half.
Louis Molyneux got himself on the scoresheet after another lovely break from Rhodri, who had options either side of him and picked the right one, putting Louis over in the corner.
Josh Hill then showed exactly what he can do when he got the ball around halfway after a lovely run and pass from Ellis Clarke, Josh put the after burners on and raced approximately 50 yards to finish in the corner.
The final score: Aspull 53–5 Glossop.
An absolutely outstanding performance.
But perhaps just as pleasing as the rugby was everything happening around the club.
The lads stayed around afterwards and watched the second half of the 2nd XV game, who had kicked off later, and the atmosphere around Emu Park at the moment is genuinely brilliant.
There is a real buzz around the place.
Players, coaches, families and supporters all pulling in the same direction. The atmosphere and family feel around the club is exactly what we want Aspull to be about. We’ve even got ourselves a really good match day photographer. Something we’ve never had before. Well we’ve had a photographer just never a good one !!!!
An all-round brilliant day.
Next week we head to Tyldesley for our first away game of the season. Not exactly an overseas adventure, but passports have been stamped and Louis is booked in for his injections this week.
