Mossley Hill 7 Aspull 35
Aspull travelled to Mossley Hill with several key players missing and Jake.
It had been a disjointed week according to Capt. Sam and it continued with the build up to the game Saturday, several players were late for the meet time. Matti Walker was just finishing off his Guinness, Aidan was busy putting away his ANTI KEBAB placards and Alex arrived later than the royal navy to save the Titanic.
Capt. Sam decided it was too far to travel to the club from Haigh and went straight to Liverpool leaving Vice Capt. Westy to sort out the kit and water bottles, well at least he picked up the kit, even if it was the wrong one.
Travelling to Liverpool was filled with anticipation and questions.
Would we all make it?
Would we pick up a win?
Would we all still have our Wheels after the game?
Jake decided that a trip away with his girlfriend was preferable to a game of rugby with his emu mates. I suppose it saved us dropping him after his last performance
Aspull had decided to go for youth and pace on the wings to fully utilise their outstanding back line. Unfortunately, we ended up with Capt. Mainwaring and Corporal Jones from Dads army.
Arriving at Mossley hill there was yet another walk to the pitch through the woods. Aiden used the time walking through the woods to tell us all about his favourite book which he found interesting and compelling. It was about a Scary Beast that Stalked the woods preying on other animals but despite him looking everywhere he could not find his hero, the Gruffalo!
Aspull’s unbeaten start to the season continued but they did not have it all their way against a determined Mossley hill side despite taking the lead after just 5 mins when full back Kieron Ford broke from his own half beating three men to score an excellent individual try which he converted -0-7 Aspull continued to apply the pressure but could not get over the line winger Nick White dropping the ball 5m out and both Hughie Bloor and Liam West being held up over the line. The home side buoyed by their defensive display began to put pressure on the Aspull line and were rewarded with a try converted 7-7. In a close 1st half Aspull once again began to dominate and created space for winger Nick White to make a mends for his early dropped ball when he scored in the corner converted by Sam Kindred to give Aspull a narrow 7-14 lead at the break.
Aspull started the 2nd half on top and when number 8 Liam West who was once again outstanding made a break chipped over the full back and regathered to score converted by Kindred 7-21. It gave them a bit of breathing space to play some more expensive rugby the forwards were making breaks and space for the backs 2nd row Aidan Clark had an excellent game.
Aspull’s fitness began to tell and a break by prop Hughie Bloor and an excellent one handed off load to hooker Michael Webb who scored under the post converted Sam Kindred 7-28 to kill off any hopes Mossley Hill had of a late comeback. Aspull’s dominance continued and Liam West went over for his 2nd try converted Kieron Ford 7-35 west could have had a hat trick but the spilled the ball after a 70metre break by Kieron ford.
Stand-off Sam Kindred was awarded man of the match outstanding displays once again from Nathan Bennett and Liam West along with 2nd row Aidan Clark.
A good win once again but a few things will need to improve for next week’s game against 2nd place newton le willows.
I know most people won’t believe this and I know the reports are not always 100% accurate but genuinely, Withers was sent to sin bin for fighting! Well it was more like 2 kids in a ball pool with handbags.
After the game several questions were left unanswered.
Why did Nick run so far in touch?
Why did Nick drop the ball 5m from the line?
Why did Sam blame everyone else when he gave an interception away?
And how did Mossley Hill find a scrum half more ginger than Alex?
Sam was nominated man of the match by Mossley Hill and was required to stand on a chair and drink a pint. Not sure how but he missed his mouth with most of it and it ended up all over his t-shirt and the floor, not like a Kindred to waste a free drink.
